7. Rich History & Culture

History & Culture of Cappadocia
As someone who didn’t grow up learning much world history beyond Canada, I’ve developed a deep curiosity about the cultural roots of the places I travel to. Cappadocia, Turkey, absolutely fascinated me — not just for its landscapes, but for the incredible stories carved into its rocks.
How were these formations created? Who lived here? And what can these ancient sites tell us about the people of the past?
I loved diving into the region’s rich history — from underground cities and cave churches to entire villages built into stone. Top historic sites include the Göreme Open-Air Museum, Zelve Open-Air Museum, and Çavuşin Old Village.
A Brief History of Cappadocia
Cappadocia’s history dates back to the Hittite Empire in the 2nd millennium BCE. Since then, it’s been home to Persians, Greeks, Romans, and Byzantines, each leaving their mark.
In the Roman era, early Christians sought refuge here, building vast underground cities and hidden churches to escape persecution — many of which you can still explore today.
Under the Ottoman Empire, Cappadocia became a thriving cultural hub. It also played a small but significant role in the Turkish War of Independence in the early 20th century.
Cappadocian Culture
Cappadocia hosts several unique festivals throughout the year, including:
🎈 Nevşehir International Balloon Festival (July)
🍇 Grape Harvest Festival (September)
8. 📷 A Dream Destination for Content Creators

Between the balloons, cave hotels, and sunrise views, this place is made for Instagram.
Top Photo Spots:

9. 💲 Budget-Friendly Travel
Aside from balloon rides, most things in Cappadocia are affordable. Meals, accommodations, and tours are all reasonably priced compared to Western Europe.
Budget tip: Book activities as part of a tour package for better deals.
10. 🍷 Local Wine Tasting

Cappadocia has a wine heritage that dates back thousands of years. The most popular grape varieties grown in Cappadocia are the white grapes Emir and Narince, and the red grapes Kalecik Karası and Öküzgözü.
Join a wine tour, especially during harvest season (September), for tastings and vineyard views.
11. 🌄 Best Sunrise & Sunset Views

Sunrise spots:
- Göreme Open Air Museum rooftops
- Love Valley
- Red and Rose Valley
Sunset spots:
- Üçhisar Castle
- Ortahisar Castle
- Pigeon Valley
Many hotels and restaurants in Cappadocia also offer sunset views from their rooftop terraces. Watching the sun paint the sky over rock formations and balloons? Pure magic.
12. 🐈 The Cutest Cats Around

Known as Cappadocia’s “guardians,” they are everywhere. Whether at breakfast, relaxing on the patio or strolling the streets, you’ll see a cute cat or kitten nearby. As I was lounging on the hotels rooftop alone, super serene quiet surroundings, just thinking about life, a cat came out of no where to lay on my lap (without attacking me!). It was one of my favorites moments, as if it sensed I needed that.
They also play an important role in the local culture and history. In fact, they have been living in Cappadocia for thousands of years, with some experts believing that they are descendants of the cats that accompanied traders long ago.
