The Absolute Best Time to Visit Costa Rica - La Fortuna Arenal & Tamarindo Guanacaste

I went to La Fortuna and Tamarindo in February and I believe it was a great time to visit. Arenal was more cool/warm but Tamarindo was nice and hot. Perfect beach weather. Most of the things I will mention are based on my experience, advice from Costa Rican locals, and research. It's up to you to out way the pros and cons and what works for you. Regardless of when you go, Costa Rica has many fun things to do all year round!

Can't read this now? Pin it for later!

Tamarindo/La Fortuna:

High/Dry Season: December - April

  • Peak season- Higher price more crowds but much more fun if looking for nightlife fun, lots more action going on

  • Jan and April are usually most expensive months to visit

  • Nesting of leatherback in Playa Grande

  • Our winter, their summer - best time for Northern American and European travelers to escape the cold back home

  • Extra hours of sunshine everyday

  • Good time for beginner surfers

.

Green/Rainy Season: May - November

  • More likely to rain the afternoon/evenings

  • Cheaper prices better deals

  • Less crowds

  • Great time for a quiet, relaxing vacation getaway

  • Good time for wet adventures

  • Peak season for green sea turtles and overall wildlife

  • Good time to see humpback whale pods

Overall:

Best Months for Good Weather/Peak Season:

The best months for good weather in La Fortuna/Tamarindo are January, February, March, April and December. If you’re young, love the crowds and want to have a lively nightlife, this is peak time to go. However, plan way ahead of time because best places to stay get booked up fast. Plus, you can save a lot on your ticket if you think ahead.

On a Budget and Want to Avoid High Crowds?

Cheapest time to visit Costa Rica is: May, June, July, August, Sept, Nov

Visit during the green season in areas like Tamarindo (Guanacaste), as it has the least rain in the country year-round. Prices are much much cheaper and the beachside is less likely to rain as opposed to near the mountains/rainforest.

If You Are a Surfer and Want the Best Waves

Green season - Bigger waves, no crowds but potentially rainy/more debris

Dry season- Consistent smaller waves, sunny, more crowds
